Possibly due to lack of availability the poor soul had to use an enclosed end
starter such as Delco Remy , the type that the starter housing shrouds the
bendix and holds a bushing at the end of the starter shaft. Perhaps the Alpine
engine it was used on had 12.0 to 1 compression and the Prince of Darkness
couldn't spin it to life. Starter technology today has come along way from
the old direct drive units. The gear reduction starter on my 1200 Harley is
about 1/3 the size of a Lucas and spins 2 enormous pistons to life. Might be
worth saving it and investigating just what was used on it or use it for a
test bed for starter improvements.
