Can't give you a total answer but I would first get rid of the gear oil and replace with engine oil as recommended in the manual. The OD should not have worked at all with the gear oil as it causes the cone clutch to slip (the problem you have experienced).

How low did the oil get - this can cause the OD to fail permanently. In my case the thing still ran ; no noise just would no longer engage.
