The Alpine engine is a battery in disguise. With an aluminum head, and the iron block, the slightest amount of PH imbalance in the coolant moves the aluminum into solution, causing slow corrosion. Neglect the coolant, and the process accelerates.
Most people have had their heads welded before, so if the corrosion is not too bad, the head can be repaired for a few hundred dls.
