What Rex said,

another problem that bit me in the side was the phasing of the distributor to the cam. In this case, the timing will even be set correctly, but the distributor rotor points either ahead or behind the correct high tension terminal in the distributor. If the rotor phasing is set one tooth advanced then the engine will typically idle fine, but as the centrifugal advance kicks in as the RPMs rise, the rotor to cap gap increases, and you get misfire.

Its a great RPM limiter though!

Dont discount this theory outright, it happens more often than you may think.
