There is a gentleman in northern Ca "perhaps the red alpine at Monterey" name Carl Christiansen, and another here in So Cal named Scott Harvey. Both are members of VARA, Vintage Auto Racing Association. I have not met either of them, but I have second hand info about thier cars and how they are configured.
Steve Alcala also is longtime member of VARA.
I am a also a member of VARA, but havent made it to the track since last July.
In VARA, the alpine runs in "F" production, where it is grouped with Minis and Sprites and Midgets, and all the other cheatin british leyland cars.
The alpine definately lacks aftermarket performance support, otherwise, the alpines would probably be cheatin and competive too.
Alpines will finish mid pack at best in FP, and more correct vintage prepping will surely put you at the back of the pack. It is unfortunate that the Alpine is no longer competitive in a class that it was originally a front runner, but that is sort of the way it goes, as people reengineer cheap cars with plentifull race goodies that never existed for SCCA production racing.
The new motto is to drive old cars fast instead of driving fast old cars.
