Another scheme I've used is to put a 6 ft or longer length of stout steel
channel or square tubing in the attic over about 4 or 5 ceiling joists to
spread the load, and then bolt or chain to that for your hoist. I've used
a come-along too, but it's sure not a confidence builder. Harbor Freight
has 1 ton chain hoists for less than $50, and that beats a $300 engine
crane. If you're like me, you'll pay for it in about a year by saving on
engine crane rentals. I've used their hoist for some time, and can
recommend it.
The only thing about using the garage door header is that it's usually
fairly low in comparison to the ceiling, and I'm one of those crazy guys
who likes to pull the trans with the engine, so I need the height. BTW, if
you really want to over-build, try wedging a 4 X 4 between the header and
garage floor out to the side of your car for extra support.
