Rob,
I checked Autobook 836 (covers Alpine and Rapier 55-65) and it seems the
1342 firing order hold true for all 55-65 Rootes 4 bangers.
On my car the vacuum advance dashpot points almost directly at the oil
filter. My number one plug wire is the one diagonal from the vacuum
advance. In other words, it is connected to the outside rear of the
cap. The distributor rotates counter-clockwise so the wires should be
in firing order accordingly.
The best way to figure this out is to rotate the engine until the TDC
mark on the crank pulley is aligned with the timing pointer. Pop the
distributor cap and the rotor will be pointing at the number one
position. Connect number one there and continue counterclockwise with
the rest of the wires in firing order.
Hope this helps,
Tom Hill
