Mike,
IMHO you should rebuilt what you have and add an overdrive. I believe
this will provide the path of least resistance for you. Any engine swap
is a pain. I considered the V6 option and I may still do it, but taking
an Alpine in "great shape" and installing a V6 decreases the value of
the car. If you rebuild your Alpine engine, have it balanced, and add
an overdrive you should meet your reliability requirements and preserve
the value of your car.

merely my opinion. A nicely crafted swap is still something to behold.
