Mike,
First, It is your car and you can do what you want.
BUT if you want my 2p. I have driven my Sr V more than twelve years now and
I have loved that 1725. I have replaced the clutch twice and the head
gasket once, but the engine is still going strong. Compression is good.
Oil pressure is 20 psi at idle. Oil leaks, but only as part of the British
anti-rust system.
Transmission sounds a bit worse for wear (especially downshifting to 3rd),
but it hasn't gotten worse in a dozen years. I don't drive on I-10 unless I
want to get across Baton Rouge in a hurry. 65 mph is fast enough. I only
have to push it when I drive to New Orleans and have to dodge pick-up trucks
going 90 mph. Then I wish I had an overdrive.
Point being, the 1725 is a tough little engine. It is easy to work on and,
in MHO, worth rebuilding for another 25-30 years.
I've changed the alternator to AC Delco and the carbs to a downdraft Weber
and the car has been better for it. I can see someone changing to a 1725
from the smaller engines. I can see a Tiger upgrading to a 289 from a 260.
But when is an Alpine no longer an Alpine?
If we met at a Sunbeam gathering, and you had converted to a V6, I would
still have my nose under the bonnet. "How did you convert it?" "How does
it drive?" It is your car. Do what your heart tells you is right!
Off the soapbox! It is now free for someone else's 2P.
