Rob,
This test procedure assumes you can start the car and the control box is
not fried. I think you can elimate the control box from the ignition
circuit by attaching the wires from terminal A and A1 together. If the
car will start the control box is likely toast.
The following is the test procedure for the Avo Model 12 control box
according to Autobook 836:
"In the event of trouble in the charging system and having checked that
the generator drive belt is not slipping and that the battery is in good
condition check the wiring by disconnecting the wire from terminal A on
the control box and connecting it to the negative terminal of a
voltmeter and the positive voltmeter terminal to an earthing point on
the chassis. If a voltmeter reading is given the wiring is in order and
the regulator must be examined."
"Remove the wires from terminal A and A1 and join them together.
Connect the negative of a moving coil voltmeter to terminal D and the
positive lead to E. Increase the engine speed until the needle flicks
and then steadies. This should occur with a volt meter according to the
ambient temperature as shown:
Ambient temperature Voltage
50 F 16.1 to 16.7
68 F 16.0 to 16.6
86 F 15.9 to 16.5
If the voltage at which the reading becomes steady is outside these
limits the regulator should be adjusted.
Stop the engine and remove the control box cover. Turn the voltage
adjusting screw clockwise to raise the setting, or vice versa, a
fraction of a turn at a time and repeat the test until the correct
setting is obtained.
