Hiccupping Series V

Hello Sunbeamers:
My Series V Alpine is starting to "burp" again. After having thought I
solved the problem (with help from the list) a couple of months ago,
yesterday, with the car up to full running temperature I put the pedal
to the metal (in 3rd at about 30MPH) and it "popped" or backfired,
through the carbs, I think. I'd noticed, over the last couple of days, a
bit of hesitation under a load (on the car, not me!) and today, although
it hasn't backfired again yet, it is definitely hesitating and feeling
like it wants to "pop" some more.

The last time I readjusted the valves (a couple of them were fairly
tight but not dangerously so), it seemed to solve the problem until now.
I'm going to adjust the valves again tommorow morning, but this is the
fourth or fifth time I've done this since I had the motor rebuilt about
6,000 miles ago so I'm starting to wonder what may be going on. I'm also
going to readjust the Strombergs and check the timing just for fun. I
wonder if I have Stombergitis as when it backfires, it seems like it may
be a lean fuel condition. (I've just acquired a pair of Weber 42DCOE
carbs so, as soon as I get a manifold for them, maybe I'll have the
problem beat).

Any new ideas out there on what may be causing this?

Thanks!!

Steve Sage
