Sounds like the sender is defective, or disconnected.
Another thing to be certain of is to verify that you have a proper
ground to the gauge, else it may behave this way as well.
The sender is on the thermostat housing casting, and has one wire
connecting to it.
The ground connects to the gauge clampdown hardware, and
comes from a lucas bullet connector, from a feed that connects
to the chassis somewhere arounf the blower motor.
