On this note, my car has never been run and currently has no servo. The
master cylinder just LOOKS bad when I examine the seal, and there is
evidence of leakage. I notice that a rebuild kit from SS is under $10 and a
new master cylinder is over $100. How do I know if it's rebuildable, and
what is involved? If it's going to require special tools or take a long
time, I might as well just get another one.

Chris,
I don't think that rebuilding the master cylinder would help
the
"softness" of your brakes. This could be cause by old rubber
hoses that
are giving way to some pressure because of age or you may
have some air
in the lines. If your master cylinder leaks or slowly goes
dowm to the
floor if you keep pressure on the brake pedal, then it's
time for a
rebuild, other that that, the problem is elseware. My
problem was with
the brake booster leaking fluid into the vacum chamber. If
you have
power brakes, I would check this out also.
