Hi Brian

On the series V there is supposed to be a rubber seal/gasket
between the timing cover and the harmonic balancer. It fits in the
grove in the timing cover and reduces the gap considerably.
Of all the 1725s I have disassembled I have never found one in
place, it is usually the source of the rubber chunks found in the
pan. I guess the fine English rubber just didn't last 20+ years in
hot oil.

On a nice tight engine with little blow by and a properly working
PCV system, the slinger and rubber "seal" seem to be effective.

Sunbeam Specialties used to have them in stock (P/N A1228028).
However it has been 10 years since I rebuilt one..

It is very important to center the timing cover on the harmonic
balancer shaft, Rootes had a special tool which I have never seen.
I found wrapping a 1/2" by 5-1/4" piece of 5 mill shim stock around
the shaft while tightening the first bolts did the job nicely.
