Rob,
During my last engine rebuilds, I removed paint from the timing chain
cover and also the oil sump (pan) as it was flaking and I thought it could
cause some problems. There is no possibility that it will rust from the
inside except the oil pan if a bit of water was to settle in there. I
removed the oil sump from my Drophead coupe this past fall to replace the
gasket after being on for 35 years and no signs of rust.
