Unhooked Ammeter

Rob:

I would guess that the most common reason that people un-hook them is that they
have been burned out due to a short on an unfused circuit (as you probably
know, our cars are notoriously undersupplied with fuses).

You can check this easily by using an ohmmeter on the two terminals or a
continuity light with a circuit through the ammeter to ground. If you get high
resistance or no light, the ammeter can no longer function, since it's shunt
and/or operating mechanism is burned out.
