Hello Everyone:
Here's the current status of my 67 Alpine. Oil pan off today. Oil pump
is shot, as is the camshaft. The cam/pump gears are completely stripped.
I guess the start of this malady may have been the failure of my oil
pump relief valve a couple of months ago when it stuck closed. I
probably drove the car for 5 miles, at very slow speeds, to keep the oil
pressure from overloading to get the car home at the time.
Unfortunately, whatever the time, it might have been enough to put too
much pressure on the gears and start them in their failure mode.
Next, the head will come out to find out why the head gasket failed and
if the welds in the rear water passage is gone too. We're hoping to also
figure out why the valve adjustments have been changing (mainly
tightening up) with alarming regularity.
This being the case, since I'm going to probably be installing my dual
Weber set up when things are put back together, what is the group's
recommendation on a camshaft for the 1725 Alpine? I have a stock cam
available, but I'd like to get a bit more "juice" from the motor. Does
anyone in Southern California have a re-grindable (or one ready for
action) cam available for sale (I need to make the cam decision in the
next couple of days)? Also, any advice on what cam grinds are best for
an every day driven Alpine?
As usual, the ideas and advice I get from the list are awesome, so
thanks in advance.
Steve Sage
