Sounds like the infamous Portawalls of old. I ran these on a 1959 Opel
Rekord
for years with no problems, and have seen them installed on many 50's
vintage
vehicles.
they are much cheaper than a new set of Coker whitewalls or any other
brand.
Until you are up close to the car you won't even notice that they are not a
true whitewall.
The last set I installed went on a 1968 Cadillac, giving it 4" wide whites
for
a grand total expense of $20, paid at a swap meet.

JC Whitney probably still handles them, or check in Hemmings.
