Re: Sunbeam Stuff, Clubs, and the net

This is a little premature, but indicates something I've been pondering
during the really dull parts of scrubbing and scraping the Tomato. Maybe
by the time my ideas actually get together someone will have beat me to
the punch, and I'll do something different, but...

Last week I bought a cast-off 486 for $100. Another $60 got me RedHat
Linux, under which I've already run 10+ simultaneous apps for several
days on top of an Apache webserver without even a wheeze. Another $200
will get me a disk with more space than anyone can reasonably use. The
machine is connected to a reasonably-fat cablemodem pipe I intend to
move my site over to that box so I can extend the range of things on it
(a larger photo library and some tutorial-ish things among others yet
un-gelled). I've thought about the idea of opening the machine up to
whoever out there wants a little space to show off their project/baby.
I wouldn't charge, because, who would pay? Then I'm going to survey all
the sites out there again (there are really quite a few) and add on what
they don't have already, or duplicate some of what there is in the way
that I think it should be done. Post-SUNI I will have some tools,
similar to what I use already, to make 'livelier' sites, with forms and
databases, etc.

My car will not be ready for SUNI, nor probably even the summer, and I'm
not even going to try hard, so I will have some free 'volunteer' time.
Maybe this 'virtual club' idea can fit in somewhere.

There is one thing that has me puzzled, however. There's no Sunbeam club
here, so I don't have any direct reference. But it seems there's little
support for the clubs that exist already, in that they are scratching
and clawing for contributions. The SUNI site has been that way too -
despite my attempts to encourage contributions (perhaps lame but there
nonetheless) there have been few, and those from members of the
organizing committee. Furthermore, the sites out there seem to have
stabilised after a brief burst of activity. 90% of what I found 'out
there' when I first started looking 2 years ago is pretty much unchanged.

Where are all these contributors? Who's going to write all this material
that everyone will appreciate so much?

PS: One thing that I think *would* be handy would be for those of us
with websites to create a "ring" so anyone visiting any one of us could
visit the others easily too. I think it's pretty easy, but I admit I
haven't done all my homework yet. It would save us all from needing to
keep explicit links to each other.
