Chris, if you do it as I said, it will not come in contact with any gaskets.
Gently pour it in so that it flows evenly to the top of the lowest freeze
plug. let it sit and then drain it out through the petcock drain on the side
of the block. Follow this same procedure with water a few times, then bust
up the rust with a wire that can reach around the cylinders and I promise it
will all be removed, then rinse it under pressure.
Rinseing it under garden hose pressure will remove all traces of HCl.
It it bothered you, you could put some baking soda in there and let it sit
as well, but a strong base is as corrosive as an acid.
And yes, always run a rust inhibitor in your system. Napa "makes" a
good one, and use distilled water. Sorry but I tend to leave out all the
details. I am not a great writer or speaker and tend to forget my target
audience when they are not there to ask me questions. Did remember to remind
people to use personal protective equiptment though! I was shooting for the
"main Idea" that there is really only a few ways to solve an Alpine engine
heating problem since they are generally all the same, i. e. clogged block,
35 year old clogged radiator.
I got tired of it with my Tiger so I had the Radiator made. Solved 11
years of white knuckle driving in one hour. Didn't even fool with the Alpine
the first boil over. Took a core to Bolsa Rad, picked it up a week later.
Treated the block, ran it for a week with the old Rad in case it clogged the
rad tubes, took out the Rad, replaced it with the new one then I had to get
a 180 degree thermostat since the car would not get up to operating temp
here in the desert! It works and I just hat to see people struggle with
flushing, timing, caps, etc, etc, when it can so easily be fixed. Hope that
clears thing up and helps you out. Lou
