Make sure that the magnet inside the plastic ring that came with the
lit is in phase with the rotor. There should be a mark on it, but if
not just put a piece of ferrous metal to it to locate the magnet & then
mark it. The distributor is turned counter-clockwise to retard.

The drive dog is offset so that the distributor can only be installed
one way. Set the engine to TDC on the firing cycle and simply static
time the distributor when you put in back on. The rotor's trailing
edge (as it turns clockwise) should line up with the #1 contact of the
distributor cap.
