ignition timing

I just installed a Pertronix ignitor in my distributor ( very easy
installation ) but now my timing is way off. Is this to be expected?
Which way do you turn the distributor to retard the spark?
While I'm at it, I have a new o-ring for the distributor to stop an
oil leak. The shop manual makes it sound very simple to remove and
replace the distributor. Is there a trick to make sure the timing isn't
completely messed up when I put it back in? Does the gear that meshes
with the teeth on the cam come out as part of the distributor assembly.
If not , then it looks like you would have to be off by 180 degrees to
replace it incorrectly. Is this correct?
