Unusually for the Alpine it is that simple, just undo the bolts at the rear
of the shaft and the rest will slide out without any oil spilt. It has to
be like this as the joint is in the cruciform and hence inaccessible. Be
careful not to damage the splines on the shaft whilst you store it for the
journey.
I don't know what you could seal the hole with though may be just a plastic
bag and elastic band over the end.
Here's a story about how Alpines and kids don't mix. I drove the 150 miles
to visit my parents last weekend in Chester and when I was about to set off
back home one of my nephews wanted to see the car. I sat him in the drivers
seat and he played merrily with the horn and then broke the overdrive lever
off. So 150 miles with no overdrive seems daunting, so I disassemble the
steering column and rig up a system where I can 'short' the overdrive on
and off whilst driving, Interesting at 70mph on the motorway.
When I looked into the price I was shocked to see the price so went to my
local electrical shop and purchased a sprung switch for minimal cost and
have installed this instead. The lever is a bit small and it's not original
Rootes gear but it works great and I needed the car for a rally in the Lake
District this weekend.
