In about 1 week I will be headed for Montana with My Series 5 in
tow. I am told I need to disconnect the drive shaft for such a long
journey to preserve the transmission. The manual makes it sound quite
simple, remove the four bolts back near the diff. and withdraw the
entire shaft from the transmission. Is it this simple? Will oil leak
from the rear of the tranny and should it be sealed to prevent
introdution of road grime? How about removing the four bolts and leaving
the shaft in place or swinging it to the side to prevent the above
concerns and eliminating the need to find room in the trunk for a drive
shaft?
