Kurt, The front suspension is made up of many components that wear,
inspection of each individually will tell which if any need replacing. The
steering cross bar has rubber bushing s to dampen individual wheel shock
from one wheel to the other so what you describe may be at least partially
normal. When we had the engine out of the car I remember that there was
minimal play in the steering so I am assuming that the tie rod ends and
steering box are good, and I replaced the bushings in the cross bar so that
is now new. Left to inspect would be the upper ball joints and lower king
pins.
The internals of transmissions by year whether od or not are identical. The
power transition in first second and third all take an indirect rout through
input shaft, cluster gear and gear selected to the output shaft. 4th is
direct drive. You have the non syncro 1st w/best ratios. The transmission
may need rebuild or may have only a bad bearing. Without hearing the whine
its hard to say....but my bet would be it needs some work but will probably
drive that way for awhile.....I would not put 80 wt gear oil in it but 20-50
probably would quiet it some without damaging it. If you have lot of
transmissions maybe it would be wise to change it out if its the only
overdrive you have and don't want to damage the overdrive.
