I bought a Lucas alternator from SS and it had a different plug on the
back from stock. I simply took one off the old alternator and switched
it out. An easy mod. Take your alternator to a starter/alternator
shop and have them bench test it. Most will do this for free. I
thought mine was bad (not charging) and it turns out it was putting out
45 amps at 3000rpm, 10amps better than stock!

Putting in a GM alternator is a common mod and eliminates the 4TR
regulator. I'm not sure what's required, but I hear it's easy. You
can probably find the tech tip on the Alpine home page (TJHiggins).
