Me thinks the "guy" bloweth smoke.

The smaller gauge wire is not going to make the current any lower.

When the wire is too small, the current is reduced due to increased
resistance.

The higher gauge wire (smaller diameter) may have been a limitation
to the max power that the amp would produce, but was not the reason
why your current was so high.

The ammeter still tells the story.

If 35 amps is too much for continous opperation on the lucas alterator,
you have few choices other than low volume listening, or going to a
beefier alternator.
