Yes, it does matter to some extent, although it will likely run fair
as is.

The main jet to choke "venturi" ratios are similar between the two
configurations,
so the real difference between the paper filter and the gauze "bird catcher"
is
the bleed jet, and performance.

What this means is that if you wanted ro run a dry element filter on the
"bird catcher" setup, you could get away with using the larger jet/choke
provided that you use a smaller high speed bleed jet. The high speed bleed
is a very thin pressed in plug, which will need to be brazed close, then
drilled
to the appropriate size.

I have a feeling though that if you got a very good breathing filter, you
could run with the "bird catcher" jetting without adverse effects.
