The pull-out switch has one weak spot: a plastic "ball" that separates
the two contacts. The ball (it's actually flat on top and pointed on the
bottom) straddles the tip of a metal finger between the contacts, and
seems to be made of two parts with a pin connecting the two through a
hole in the finger. Between the plastic decaying and the different
thermal expansion behaviours of metal and plastic, it's likely that the
ball is gone. You should be able to feel the contact make and break.
I was going to use a bead from a craft shop and superglue, until I found
a spare that was intact.
The PO may have installed a two-speed switch.
