I had some more progress on swapping my SV running gear into the new S3. I
did as I said I would. I pulled my Alpine cross member (wheels, tires,
brakes and all), engine and transmission fully together out the bottom of
the car. It went very smoothly - except for one warning below.
I put the front tires on two car dollies, and put a dolly under the
transmission with a stack of wood between the two. I also made struts
between the dollies so that they were effectively one piece and would not
separate. I did this because I was warned that the engine mounts are very
flexible and I was worried that the cross member would push the front two
dollies forward and the engine would drop down. Fortunately this did not
happen.
Unfortunately, the cross member rolled forward around the axis of the
wheels, all the way down to the ground. I was able to quickly jack it back
up and keep a floor jack under it. The motor mounts really did twist.
Fortunately, they were new and elastic enough to not break. I figure their
life span was shortened big time. But they remained fully intact.
The rest was a piece of cake. Jacked up the car with a large floor jack
just forward of the center of the cross member. Pulled and rolled out the
whole thing. Rolled it over to the other car, pushed it in. Lowered the
car and popped back in the 12 bolts.
No scratched paint. No first motion shaft alignment problems (or scratches
on the clutch face from the first motion shaft).
