Series V Thermostat

Hello All,

I took my car out Friday for what will probably be the last weekend of
top-down weather in the NE. The car ran great, and everything worked fine,
but I noticed a slight coolant smell every so often in the crisp fall air.
Keeping an eye on the temp gauge, I drove the car all afternoon until I got
a chance to find the source of the smell. (Is it me, or does everybody else
have mental pictures of the various systems that you access as you're
driving home to fix the problem.) I pictured a leaking heater control
valve, or a loose hose clamp, but when I poped the hood I found a small
trace of coolant weeping out the thermostat housing gasket. The last time
the housing was sealed, red R.T.V. was used, but it manged not to hold.
I've always used blue R.T.V. Any opinions? Also, does the water pump pully
need to come off to get the thermostat housing to clear it's studs?

TIA
Tom
