Hello Tom,
     Many times the thermostat housing is corroded beyond use, but if it is
not, check it for warpage. The mounting surface should be flat. If it is
not, place some 220 grit wet and dry sandpaper on a piece of glass. Sand it
down, wet, till it is flat. When you put it back on, put a thin bead of RTV
on both sides of the gasket. Allow it to dry a "little" before you put it
on, so it doesn't just squeeze out. This step can contribute to the gasket
failure if it isn't done. Red is equal to blue other than it is better for
high temp applications. Put it on, and torque it to spec. I can't recall
whether I had to remove the water pump. Hope this tip helps.
