Calibrating Speedos

There was some talk the other day about calibrating speedometers on our
cars. I have to point out some possible mis-information. While the speedo
shops can adjust the needle to read correctly, those adjustments do not
affect the odometer or trip meter. So, if you are running a "fixed"
speedo, your odometer is probably still running on the incorrect
speed/mileage. The only way to change the guage to make all run correctly
is to get a converter to attach to the back - or change the gears on the
inside of the guage. It is my understanding that the gears on the inside
of the guage are simply not available.

The reason for this is that the needle "speed" depends upon magnets in a
spinning disc, which can be changed or adjusted. The odometer runs on a
fixed gear that attaches to the spinning cable which can only be adjusted
with different gears.

If someone knows of one of the speedo shops that has a supply of these
internal gears, let me know. But, the last I heard, there is no such
animal available.
