Hello Alpiners
Our 66SV has been sitting for a couple of weeks waiting for a
carburetor rebuild. Prior to the rebuild the rear one would leak gas off
and on, after awhile it stopped the off and on stuff and got down to
some serious leaking. This is when we parked the car and ordered rebuild
kits and Grose jets. From past experience [not with lbcs] I thought the
problem was a stuck needle and seat or a bad float. So with the rebuild
kits and the Grose jets installed along with a different float from a
spare carburetor back on the car they went. Having never tuned these
beasts before I was a little nervous, but with the manual procedure it
started right up, and sounded good. Then while waiting for the car to
come to operating tempter it happened. The rear carburetor started
leaking just like before the rebuild. Now my theory is the float got
saturated and will not float anymore. This is the float I got out of the
spare carburetors that came with the car. Is this a common problem with
the rear carburetor on Alpines, bad floats that is, or am I on the wrong
track? Does anyone have a rear float they could let go? A Weber is not
a choice as we would like to maintain the original carburetors. Thanks
for your help jim
