replacing transmission rear seal

Has anybody done this lately or have a real good memory.I removed
the circlip , now what is the trick to extracting the old seal from the
housing. I tried prying it with a screwdriver using the mainshaft for
leverage but the mainshaft flexes more than I am comfortable with. Might
I do damage if I keep trying this?
Also, it was suggested to me to lower the transmission so I don't
have to work through the tunnel . I stopped lowering it when I saw the
exhaust might collide with it's tunnel. Do you have to unbolt the
exhaust to do this? And will the engine mounts flex enough without
harming them ?
