Rob,

The mainshaft is okay to pry against it is strong enough and thick enough.
That seal is a bear to get outeven when the trans is sitting on the bench. If
you can get a few holes into the seal metal surface close to the outside but
not close enough to scratch the aluminum seal surface you can try to use a
slide hammer seal puller with a screw to screw into the hole in the seal. One
other method but it would be hard to do in the car is to try to collapse the
seal towards the mainshaft in a few places by using a sharp awl or chisile
and hammer. Good luck!
