Here it is, into December already and I'm finally getting around to updating
everyone on the Team.Net server fund drive initiated about six weeks ago.
Who, me get behind? If you don't recall hearing about this, or just joined
or whatever, and want to know the full story, you can send a message to
majordomo(at)autox.team.net, and in the body of the message put nothing but
get admin server_fund.1999
If you are wondering why on earth you are getting this message from me, it is
because you are subscribed to one or more of the Team.Net lists hosted at
autox.team.net. Included below is a current listing of active lists.
As for the server fund, it is coming along better than I expected. I've
gotten through maybe 2/3rds or 3/4ths of the donations so far, but have sent
acknowledgements to maybe only a quarter of those. And, I currently have
close to $4,000 dollars in the bank from this fund drive. Not bad, thanks
again to all the contributors. And there's likely another thousand or so
waiting for me to process, assuming the average donation of just over $20
holds for the envelopes I've yet to open.
I'd say it has been a success. I've already replaced the dead disk that
precipitated this call for contributions, and perhaps I'll be buying a new
server before the end of the year, possibly bringing it online shortly
thereafter, depending on what hardware and operating system I end up choosing.
We shall see. And I'm going to move forward with the plan to move the
service from the University to a commercial provider as I outlined in the
original plea. Good timing, as some of the campus network folks have started
to take note on just how many bits are flowing into and out of autox.team.net.
No need to panic yet, but I better get hopping on that project! And answer
the stack of email from the first plea still awaiting my response. I'll get
to it eventually, trust me!
