I'm rebuilding mine as well, but right now I await the kit from Rick. Mine's
a Series II. Are you trying to get it out of the car? Mine had a big washer
thingy that you had to compress the spring some to finagle the washer's slot
to line up with the plunger rod to get the spring off. This will then let it
slide out frontways. If you mean getting the plunger off after it's off the
car, there's that snap ring, then it just pulls out. Mine came out w/o any
problem.
