If you do buy the cheaper jack stands (On which the leg braces are held together by spot welds) clean off the paint and put full welds on both sides of every spot weld. Cheap peace of mind!

I just wanted to pass on a frendly warning about working under your
cars. A friend of ours was just crushed to death on Tuesday when his
Corvette fell while he working underneath.
I still haven't heard any details as to what caused the car to fall, but
this guy was a well respected member of the Local and National Corvette
community. He was a guy like us and working on his cars was his passion.
Please exercise safety when using jackstands! I don't know the best
advice for working under your cars, but if you think you shouldn't crawl
under it...Dont! I have a couple of old stands that are much larger than
the ones you can buy at the local parts stores. They have a very broad
base and seem to be very sturdy with a car on them. Some of these newer
stands I see just seem flimsy and unstable.
These terrible things do happen and I'd hate to see it happen to one of
us! - Ian
