My old Petersen publication said that it will burn the points in the
regulator on some double contact regulator types. It further says that
for complete safety, remove the field lead from the regulator and ground
it, then flash between the armature and battery terminals to polarize
any generator with an "A" circuit (i.e. single contact, field windings
are grounded in the regulator; Systems with "B" circuit have the field
grounded in the generator.)
