Alright - I'm starting to go SERIOUSLY nuts.

As many of you are probably sick of hearing, I've been battling a shortness
of breath in my '69 2000 - the car hits a wall at 5,000 rpm. It feels like
the choke is yanked, if you're inclined to see what I'm talking about -
wind 'er up to 5K and pull that choke!

So I pulled the float covers (note - no way to do the "wait until it acts
up and shut er down, then pull the float covers at the side of the road"
routine - the car diesels when shut off), and found something odd:

The front needle is about 1/16" or so longer than the rear; there was a
thick aluminum washer underneath each. This left the front float set quite
a bit different than the rear; since I saw no mention of this oddity in my
manual, I put both washers under the rear to even the score. Both floats
thus equal, I reassembled it and went for a ride.

WOW! it now gently peters out at 6500 or so, that I can live with. A
happy camper, I adjusted the idle and mixture, just to get everything right
- another road trip, still running great.

So, it must have been the floats, huh? I put the air cleaner back on, and
took it for a final spin. WHAT THE?!?!?! same **exact** symptoms. Hmmm...
must be the air cleaner element.

Easy to test, I pulled the air cleaner lid and element and ran it up again.
SAME THING. GRRR!!!! so, what's that mean?

IOW, it appears that the air cleaner BASE is slowing me up.

What's going on?

Help?
