You can take it in and out of gear without the clutch when the engine
isn't running and you aren't using it to keep the car from rolling.

Stan Chernoff has a replacement (non-original) clutch master cylinder
that I believe is about half the price of new.  I've got a non-original
on my car; you just need to adjust the clevis on rod (it's threaded).  
I don't have his e-mail address, but his number is 310-DATSUNS.  He's
using lafn.org too, so he may be very close to you.
