actually what i had in mind was running a "glasspack" type muffler along
side the car (the vette reference was dead-on). would it be too hard to get
the exhaust to run on the other side of the frame rail?

If you can fit the muffler between the X frame it shouldn't be too hard to
do. I thought about it and mentioned it to the muffler guy but he advised
against it for a variety of reasons, the most important being that it would
be very loud so close to your head. As it is my car is loud to me with the
exhaust being in the rear. Also the pipes offer very little clearance.

A friend had a big block 65 Vette with side exhausts and it was loud, very
loud and he constantly burned his legs on the pipes.
