If you are not diss-assembling the gauges, then the best way to lube them is
to set them face down, remove the wire clip on the drive shaft, and put a
generous amount of lubricant where the tail shaft feeds through the brass
bushing. We use a high grade bearing oil, but there is a lube that is sold at
the auto parts stores called "Prolong" that works very well. (No pot-shots
please).
Let the gauges sit over night, and don't forget to put the clip back on.
Without it, the calibration on them will be way out of wack. It is definately
a good idea to lube them, especially if they have been sitting for any length
of time. It only takes one time for the bushing and the shaft to "fuse"
together, and you can pretty much kiss the gauge good-bye.
