My trunk reeked of gas when I first got the car. I discovered that both the
vent and filler-to-tank hoses were partially rotted near the ends and under
the clamps. I removed both, saw I had enough "extra" to trim, then
reattached. That seems to have worked for 95-percent of the odor.

Next action is to replace the filler-to-tank hose and the gas gauge sender
gaskets.

Does a 2000 engine require premium gas?  I would have thought so but my
engine does not ping with regular gas.  Is this possibly doing any harm?  My
67 Mercedes would ping like a Jamaican steel drum on regular.
 
Also when I fill up the tank I notice a fuel odor, I obviously need to get
that checked out but I'm wondering some likely causes.
