Quick way to see if you are at TDC on the correct stroke.

Mark the distributor (not the cap) where No. 1 spark plug is, and pull the 
distributor cap off.  If the rotor is pointing at or near #1 you're right, 
if it's opposite, you are off by 180 degrees.  Turn the crank one 
revolution.

Saves having to pull the valve cover.
