Nick, I raced a TR-4A IRS for 24 years in SCCA (DP until 1976, then EP).  I 
got a blueprint for aluminum rear hubs from Group 44.  Had a local machine 
shop machine the hubs, then assembled them with Corvair (1965-68) stub 
axles, bearings & seals.  While Group 44 used the Mercedes half shafts 
(installed backwards), I never saw the need.  I modified the Corvair yokes 
to accept a Triumph universal joint, and used the stock half shafts.  I had 
to shorten the male half by about 1/4".

Before I made this switch, I broke one stock stub axle in 1975 and one in 
1976.  I switched to this set-up in 1977, and never had a rear axle (or 
half shaft) problem again.  Let me know if you want the blueprint for the 
hub - I'll try to dig it out.

Its OPINION time here at the Garage of Mystery...time for all you
"independent types" to cast a vote.

I'va always run solid axle cars and didn't pay much attention to what the 
IRS
guys were doing with their rear ends...no, wait that didn't come out
right...their car's rear end <g>. I seem to remember Corvair axles, Datsun
axles and Mercedes half shafts being mentioned, but what is the "hot lick"
these days? Has anyone got first hand descriptions and modifications done?
How complicated etc etc...

The Duke is finally back in the shop and I can actually start working on 
the
car instead of waiting...
