I find that four pounds is just about right. It's very worthwhile to have a
pressure guage right after the regulator.

This is what I have been doing since the early 70's.  I bought a regulator, 
someone at work set the pressure, and I have never checked the setting, or 
the pressure between the regulator and the carburetors.  I guess I better 
start checking this pressure.  It could be another potential trouble spot.
