Say Bill, I didn't see anyone answering your sizing question.  The size of
pipe is determined by the kind and quantity of equipment you're using in the
shop.  Some sanders take a lot of air flow and some die grinders take very
little.  You need to look at the minimum air flow (usually in cfm) and
pressure (usually in psi) of the tools and then start calculating pipe size.
In my opinion, 1 1/4" pipe is pretty big.  You can usually get away with
3/4" and in extreme cases 1".
