Tony,
I do that on all my engines too. My TR4A doesn't leak from the rear seal
(very much) with just a BFE kit and two hoses running from the draught tube
location and the valve cover to a catch can. As others have mentioned, just
the oily mist that comes out of that can and the minor leaks get the engine
compartment dirty after a few weekends.
On the TR4 my son drives I realize that the vacuum system is set up wrong,
sucking from the draught tube location and the engine is not sealed. I did
replace the crankshaft after a tranny case failure (PO sysdrome) but I kept
everything else as is. The rear seal is an obvious compromise but I'm going
to seal the engine and hook the evac tube to the valve cover as has been
suggested and see just how bad it is before I pull the engine.
